Helleborus foetidus
Part Shade to Shade
Zone: 6 - 9
Height: 18-24"
Flower stems and buds begin to form in the latter part of December in a light green while the base foliage turn an black-olive. Continues to grow on and off until February when it begins to come into bloom. The green flowers, which may occasionally have maroon borders, will last well into March and April. Bloom height is 18 inches to two feet. Lenten Rose prefers moist soils and shaded conditions.
Helleborus niger
Zone: 4 - 8
Height: 12-18"
Christmas Rose has the ability to bloom in the darkest months of the year when everything else is frozen solid. These evergreen perennials have shiny, dark green leathery leaves. Each flower stalk bears a single 2 to 4 inch white flower (often tinged with pink). They should be planted in partial shade or preferably under deciduous trees, which allows them to receive sunlight in winter. Be sure to provide some protection from strong winter winds. They require deep, fertile, well draining but moist soil.
Helleborus orientalis 'Heritage Mix'
Zone: 5 - 9
Bold pinks, reds and purple tinted flowers in early spring.
Helleborus orientalis
The flowers are 3" across in white with a lavender or pink blush. Where the soil freezes, a midwinter thaw will bring a much appreciated floral display. Helleborus will grow in heavy to light shade in rich, loose, woodsy soil.
