This shrub is native to the Northeast, where it grows in bogs, swamps, and deciduous forests. It has an upright habit with arching branches. Fall foliage colors include yellow, orange, and deep reddish-purple. The plant produces broad, flat-topped clusters of white flowers in early to mid June. They are followed by showy, edible berries, which, as they ripen, change color from yellow to pink and red to blue and finally black. The fruits attract a large number of different birds.
